Family Separation in Their Own Words: How Ending Legal Services Is Another Step Toward Separating Families Again

The first Trump administration forcibly separated migrant families under a policy officially known as “zero tolerance.” More than a thousand children remain separated from their parents. In Ms. L. et al v ICE, the court required that the government provide separated families with services, including legal services, to help them reunify and heal. On April 11th, 2025, the second Trump administration terminated funding for the legal services program that provides legal services to separated families. The Women’s Refugee Commission discusses the dangers of ending legal services for separated families and tells the story of parents and children, in their own words.
