With the United States government exploring the use of reception centers to process migrants at the US-Mexico border, the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) examines asylum processing in Europe to identify crucial lessons for US policymakers considering the introduction of European-style reception centers in the distinct regional context of the Western Hemisphere. In this backgrounder, WRC recommends that the development and implementation of any reception centers for migrant processing protect the human rights of and guarantee dignity and due process for people seeking asylum, not least by minimizing restrictions on movement and ensuring that stays are extremely limited.
