WRC Calls on New UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to Champion Rights of Refugee Women and Girls

Today, the Senate confirmed Linda Thomas-Greenfield as US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN).

Following the confirmation, Sarah Costa, executive director of the Women’s Refugee Commission, issued the following statement:

“We welcome the confirmation of Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield, who brings a wealth of experience in the Foreign Service and a keen understanding of humanitarian and human rights issues.

“Her leadership will be critical in bringing much-needed attention to resolving ongoing crises. And at a time when displacement levels have reached record highs, we call on Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield to prioritize the rights of refugees, in particular women and girls, in her work at the UN.

“In the past four years, we have witnessed cruelty and demonization of those seeking refuge in our country, attacks against women’s sexual and reproductive health, and the United States walking back its international commitments. Re-establishing US leadership on global humanitarian policy and ensuring the human rights of refugees must guide decisions the United States takes at the UN, including in the UN Security Council.

“We look forward to working with Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield and her colleagues in ensuring that refugees and asylum seekers everywhere have their voices heard and their rights respected.”
