Women's Refugee Commission Applauds Kanem Appointment to UNFPA ED

New York, NY – UNFPA today announced that Dr. Natalia Kanem has been appointed as the organization’s executive director by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Dr. Kanem served as acting director following the unexpected death of Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin. Prior to that, she served as UNFPA deputy executive director, programme.

In response to today’s announcement, Sarah Costa – executive director of the Women’s Refugee Commission – issued the following statement:

“I have known Natalia for many years and applaud this appointment. She will bring her commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls to the helm of UNFPA. Natalia has seen first-hand the impact of conflict on the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls and she understands the importance of ensuring access to family planning services in humanitarian settings.”

“Given current political uncertainties and the global refugee crises, it is critical that we all step up to protect the health and rights of at-risk women and girls. UNFPA has an essential role to play in advancing that agenda. WRC has been proud to partner with UNFPA over the years, most recently at the London Summit on Family Planning this summer, and we look forward to working with Natalia and her team moving forward.”
