The United States has traditionally been a leader in resettling those who flee violence and persecution. It’s unfortunate that the House has succumbed to fear mongering and political grandstanding.

Refugees are already the most thoroughly vetted group of people who come to the United States, undergoing rigorous screening and background checks before they’re allowed to enter.

Scapegoating Syrian refugees will not make the U.S. safer. It will only make it harder for people who are fleeing violence to find a safe haven in this country. And because most of those who are resettled in the United States are from the most vulnerable populations: women, children, and those with disabilities, we are turning our backs on refugees most at risk of continued violence.
