Gender-Based Violence in Refugee Settings
PublishedIn the late 1990s, increased attention to rape in war improved international understanding of how and why such violence occurs. Evidence suggests that sexual violence in situations of armed conflict is often arbitrary and unsystematic, partly a result of the breakdown in community support systems, social norms, and laws.
