Women’s Refugee Commission Responds to U.S. Presidential Election Results
New York, NY – Following the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States, the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) issued the following statement:
Nearly all of us at the Women’s Refugee Commission are women. Many of us are immigrants or have family members who are immigrants. Many of us are the mothers and fathers of daughters. With the election of Donald Trump, we recognize the fear, pain, and uncertainty many migrants and refugees, and women and girls, in the U.S. and around the world are feeling today.
Starting today, the Biden administration must quickly take action to protect migrant and refugee women. We urge the administration to issue long-awaited regulations to preserve access to asylum for women fleeing gender-based persecution and strengthen humanitarian protections for victims of domestic violence and other gender-based crimes.
Whatever happens next, WRC will stand up for migrant and refugee women’s autonomy and rights. We will work to ensure displaced women and girls around the world have access to safe asylum, protection from violence, and critical sexual and reproductive healthcare. We will do everything we can to keep migrant parents and children from the brutal pain of forced separation and detention. We will advocate for continued funding for women and girls, people who are LGBTQI+, and others who, through no fault of their own, are displaced by conflict and crisis.
At WRC, we believe in the strength and power of women and girls, and how that power is amplified when we stand in solidarity with each other. We believe that the United States of America is at its greatest when we treat all people with compassion and respect their dignity and humanity. To all the women, girls, and displaced people in the U.S. and around the world seeking to shape your own lives and your own futures: we stand with you.
