Disabilities

The Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children today released “Disabilities among Refugees and Conflict-Affected Populations,” the first major report to address the critical needs of a virtually invisible population: refugees and people displaced within their own countries who suffer from physical, sensory or mental disabilities.

This companion piece to the report "Disabilities among Refugees and Conflict-affected Populations," this resource kit provides practical guidance for UNHCR and humanitarian agency field staff. Major recommendations include making refugee camps accessible to people with disabilities and ensuring that they have full and equal access to the mainstream services that other refugees receive.

This PowerPoint presentation describes the Women’s Refugee Commission's current partnership with UNHCR on the implementation of guidance on persons with disabilities in selected countries.

The Women’s Refugee Commission consulted with persons with disabilities in seven countries to assess the vulnerability of this population to acts of gender-based violence. 

Around the world, an estimated 3.5 million displaced people live with disabilities in refugee camps and urban slum settlements. The Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children, with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, undertook a six-month research project to assess the situation of those with disabilities among refugee and conflict-affected populations. Using our field research in five countries, Ecuador, Jordan, Nepal, Thailand and Yemen, the Women’s
Commission sought to map existing services for displaced persons with disabilities, identify gaps and good practices and make concrete recommendations on how to improve services, protection and participation for displaced persons with disabilities.
