Around the world, asylum seekers are often treated as criminals and detained in jails and jail-like facilities. This violates their rights, exposes women and children to violence and exploitation, and limits their access to legal systems. The Women’s Refugee Commission monitors and holds to account US immigration practices toward those seeking protection by regularly visiting the US-Mexico border, detention centers, and government-run facilities for unaccompanied children, and meeting with government officials and service providers. We call for smart and humane policies that favor release, including into community-based support programs, to ensure access to legal and social services.
